V&A East Museum
Precision acoustic engineering meets architectural ambition at one of the world’s most celebrated cultural institutions — where a geometry described as ‘unbuildable’ became a flawless, seamless finish.
The Brief
Simplicity were appointed by Warwick Group to design and install bespoke acoustic ceiling systems across multiple areas of V&A East Museum, including the stairwells and the fourth-floor gallery and events space. The brief demanded a dual standard: high-performance acoustic management in a busy public environment, delivered to the exacting aesthetic standards expected of one of the world’s most celebrated cultural institutions.
The Challenge
The centrepiece of the scope and its greatest technical challenge was the bespoke prismatic coffered ceiling in the fourth-floor events space. The design featured downward-sloping surfaces with constantly changing angles, creating a geometry that offered no room for compromise.
The architectural intent required absolute continuity throughout. Joints, visual lines and panel edges had to align perfectly across different structural planes simultaneously — any deviation, however small, would be immediately visible across the entire ceiling. The geometry was, by conventional methods, effectively unbuildable on site.
Our Approach
To resolve the complexity of the prismatic ceiling, Simplicity employed a rigorous Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) process. Rather than attempting to solve the geometry on site, all technical detailing was fully resolved during the design and pre-construction phase, allowing our installation team to execute with millimetre accuracy from the outset.
The GRG edge features were manufactured off-site to the precise angles and profiles required, ensuring each element arrived on site ready to install without adjustment. This approach transformed what appeared to be an unbuildable detail into a controlled, repeatable process — enabling the site team to set out and install with confidence and consistency across the full ceiling area.
Across the wider general areas and stairwells, Sto acoustic ceiling systems were supplied and installed to manage reverberation effectively, while maintaining the clean, considered aesthetic running throughout the building.
The Result
The completed ceilings at V&A East Museum deliver on both fronts: a high-performance acoustic environment and a finish of genuine architectural quality. The fourth-floor events space in particular stands as a demonstration of what becomes possible when complex geometry is properly engineered before it reaches site. The prismatic ceiling reads as a single, seamless, monolithic form, the complexity of the system entirely hidden beneath a flawless surface.
This project reflects Simplicity’s capability to work at the intersection of acoustic performance and architectural precision, delivering bespoke ceiling solutions within landmark public buildings to the highest possible standard.
